Microsoft Windows 8 Reviewed

After Apple’s Mountain Lion OS, it’s great comeback by Microsoft. Initially I too didn’t liked (hated) Windows 8, but when I used it I fell in love with Windows 8.

On 1st Oct 2012 Windows 8 was released to manufacturing. Microsoft held an event on 25th Oct to launch Windows 8 and general availability on next day. According to Microsoft, there were about 535,000 downloads of the developer preview within 12 hours of its release. Its wallpaper said “shhh… let’s not leak our hard work”

They started with simplicity and again came to simplicity.

Windows 8 is best for tablets and touch screen monitors and laptops.

Versions of windows 8

  1. Windows 8 – This is the vanilla version of this OS. And it lacks features like Encryption and Windows-To-Go.
  2. Windows 8 Pro – This is the most selling and preferable version. It has almost features of Windows 8. The only missing are the ones used by enterprise customers. If you are buying a computer with Windows 8 or want to update the OS of your existing machine, this is the version you should buy.
  3. Windows 8 Enterprise – This version is for customers who want volume licencing. The enterprise version has several specific features that are important for system administrator in large companies.
  4. Windows 8 RT – This version is only available preinstalled. It’s the most basic version. It’s only available in tablets and computers with ARM processors. It includes Microsoft Office 2013 Student version preinstalled.

I use Windows 8 Pro. My PC’s configuration are as follows-

Processor – i3 540  @ 3.07GHz

Motherboard – Intel H55tc series

RAM 4GB DDR3 1333MHz

Hard Disk – (500GB sagate+1000GB segate) 7200rpm + iOMEGA 500GB portable

Monitor - LG 700E

Logitech MK320 Wireless Keyboard and Mouse

LG DVD Super Multi Writer

Microsoft has said that any computer that is running Windows 7 can run Windows 8 with ease. I tested on my old PC running Windows 7. But it didn’t worked. Least required configuration given by Microsoft is as follows-

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
  • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
  • Disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

Installation

Installation procedure is same as that of Windows 7. The best thing that I liked was Windows 8 detected my connected devices automatically and installed their drivers. So you don’t need to install the drivers.

The First Screen

As you complete with the installation you will see a big “Hi” on your screen and then takes some time to setup with Start Menu. Many people think that there is no desktop in Windows 8. But there is one tile in start menu named as “desktop”. This new interface is very good. It is also known as modern UI (user interface)

Startup  and shutting time (neglecting the time to type your password)

On my machine the starup time is around 10 sec and shuts down in 5 sec. So we can call it Ultra pc.  And on my friend’s PC it is about 50sec and 30sec respectively [he uses Windows 8 Enterprise. So enerprise is bit slower.

Start Menu

It contains some preinstalled apps. They include mail, people, messaging, desktop, calendar, photos, finance, weather, store, maps, etc.

Software Compatibility

Almost all softwares which worked on Windows 7 work with Windows 8. It directly detects the necessary system required softwares. For example, Microsoft Zune Requires .NET Framework3.5
(only  .NET Framework 4.0 comes preinstalled) and then downloads from internet. There may be some softwares, only 2% who need Windows 7 compatibility mode

Security

Security is the most important thing. Windows Defender is enough to protect your computer against viruses and malwares. You get a notification whenever a virus is detected. Some advanced users may require Antivirus programme. Quick Heal, Bit Defender are some of the supported ones.

The Blue Screen Error

Initially, it gave a lot of information after crashing. But in Windows 8 the screen is light blue in colour and gives an emotion of sad face “:(” on crashing....
